Being the second largest by territory and most populated island of Hawaiian Islands, Oahu hosts the capital of the State, Honolulu. As a volcanic island there is a volcanic mountain in the middle part and the most of the human settlement is situated near the costs like Honolulu is situated at the southeast coast. Dreamlike conditions and lifestyle make this island’s 900,000 inhabitants feel themselves well, because beautiful nature attracts a lot of tourists and offers great opportunities to make profit. Residents of Oahu (as done through Hawaii) call themselves “locals”, not paying attention to ancestry.
Waikiki Beach is one of the most known one in the whole world, situated in Waikiki district, Honolulu. In the 1800s local royalty used to rest around there using early longboards for surfing and just relaxing at the dreamlike beach. First hotels were opened in 1880s, but 1893 a Greek-American businessman opened guesthouse named “Sans Souci”, which in French means “without care” referring to easy lifestyle and complete relaxation. Old location of this hotel favored by many continental tourists is still called “Sans Souci Beach”.
At present the area is crowded with hotels and venues, also a lot of events are held at the beach every year like surfing contests, outdoor events, hula contests and outrigger canoe races. There have been problems over the time with erosion as tides tend to wash away large amounts of sand every year. Many different measures have been conducted to protect and conserve the beach’s condition, for example in the 1920s and 1930s there were occasions when sand was imported by ferries and barges from Manhattan Beach, California.
Although beach offers lots of active and lazy vacation probabilities, the whole Oahu is completely worth discovering. This can be done by hiring a car, service providers for example are Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, JN Rentals, National Rent-A-Car and Thrifty.
