Hawaiian Huna, The New Thought.

Huna is a Hawaiian word taken from the ancient kahuna, which is translated as priest, shaman, minister, sorcerer and in general an expert in any profession. The term was adopted by Max Freedom Long, an American teacher and founder of the metaphysical theory of his, which he named as New Thought movement.

Freedom Long visited Hawaii in 1917 to work as a teacher. There he was introduced to the religious beliefs of the kahunas. Long desired to understand at the fullest the practices of this religion, but he left Hawaii in 1931 without getting there. Three years later one day he woke up with a revelation. He thought that the secrets of the religion were hidden within the Hawaiian language. From the Hawaiian word for secret, ‘’Huna’’ he named after the new religion he has thought of.

This new religion of his was very similar of course with the one of the Hawaiian kahunas. Based on their 3 levels of our selves or our consciousness, he claimed that a low, middle and high level of selves existed. These are the subconscious, emotional, intuitive, the rational self of us, the conscious and logical, and the super conscious that is supposed to be connected with the divine element that people may have inside and is waiting for everyone to discover it on his own and unleash it to approach divinity.

Based on this stuff, Long expands the belief with his theory that changes a bit the Hawaiian concept of manna, which Hawaiians take as a divine power, and transforms it into a vitalizing life force which can be used ultimately to heal body and mind and achieve fulfillment, when the 3 selves are trained and understood properly.

The 7 principles of Huna are:

1. IKE (ee-kay) – The world is what you think it is.
2. KALA – There are no limits.
3. MAKIA (mah-kee-ah) – Energy flows where attention goes.
4. MANAWA (man-ah-wah) – Now is the moment of power.
5. ALOHA – To love is to be happy with (someone or something).
6. MANA – All power comes from within.
7. PONO – Effectiveness is the measure of truth.

The Battle of Pearl Harbor

One of the most important dates of World War II is 7th December 1941, known as the Operation Hawaii given by the Japanese Imperialistic Military Headquarters or just the Battle of Pearl Harbor as it is called by Americans. Pearl Harbor was an important US navy base in the Pacific Ocean which hosted battleships, destroyers, cruisers, anti-aircraft ships, submarines and minelayers along with regular military facility buildings and soldiers.
America had isolationism in the beginning of the World War II as they had no direct threat from any party of the war. This attack however engaged US to World War II by declaring war against Japan, after what fascist Germany and Italy declared war to US. This surprise attack radically changed USA domestic views about the war and US role in it as people now felt a real threat, not just saw news from faraway lands.
Japanese stroke with a surprise air strike having a small submarine backup. Altogether were used 353 Japanese aircrafts in two waves launched from six aircraft carriers and five midget submarines. US Navy suffered severe damage: 4 battleships, honor and pride of any navy were sunk, other four damaged. Also three destroyers, three cruisers, an anti-aircraft training and one minelayer vessel were lost among 188 aircrafts. Also 2402 people died and 1282 were injured. Japanese did not attack fuel storages, power supplies, torpedo storage, submarine piers, headquarters nor any other important structure as it was considered useless due to the Japanese generals faith that Japanese maneuvers will be done before US could recover from this surprise attack and help any of the allies Japanese Army would attack.
This was a big miscalculation by Japanese. Although Americans were surprised and shocked, damage was recovered in a short amount of time and what is most important, aircraft carriers and submarines were still available as well as all the facilities of Pearl Harbor. Japan officially declared war the very next day, but in overall capitulated after US nuclear attacks on Japan ground.
Pearl Harbor is today the main naval force of US in Pacific Ocean. While visiting Hawaii and Oahu, this is a must-see historical landmark and memorial site. Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, JN Rentals, National Rent-A-Car and Thrifty are the car companies which offer you the ability to rent a car and see historical Pearl Harbor yourself.

Waikiki Beach is one of the most known one in the whole world, situated in Waikiki district, Honolulu. In the 1800s local royalty used to rest around there using early longboards for surfing and just relaxing at the dreamlike beach. First hotels were opened in 1880s, but 1893 a Greek-American businessman opened guesthouse named “Sans Souci”, which in French means “without care” referring to easy lifestyle and complete relaxation. Old location of this hotel favored by many continental tourists is still called “Sans Souci Beach”.
At present the area is crowded with hotels and venues, also a lot of events are held at the beach every year like surfing contests, outdoor events, hula contests and outrigger canoe races. There have been problems over the time with erosion as tides tend to wash away large amounts of sand every year. Many different measures have been conducted to protect and conserve the beach’s condition, for example in the 1920s and 1930s there were occasions when sand was imported by ferries and barges from Manhattan Beach, California.
