Huna is a Hawaiian word taken from the ancient kahuna, which is translated as priest, shaman, minister, sorcerer and in general an expert in any profession. The term was adopted by Max Freedom Long, an American teacher and founder of the metaphysical theory of his, which he named as New Thought movement.

Freedom Long visited Hawaii in 1917 to work as a teacher. There he was introduced to the religious beliefs of the kahunas.
